"My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that you faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power." I CORINTHIANS 2:4-5
It's a waste of breath to try and persuade anyone to believe in God by eloquent words or persuasive arguments alone. Do you know what more is needed?
I was invited to a dinner party in Paris. The hosts, a couple of Russian nobility, had fled to France during a political crisis. Their Parisian chateau was a favorite place for others like themselves to gather with poets, artists, writers and actors. They loved to meet people who had something new to say. When they heard of me, an American lady preaching in a nearby church, they were curious.
In the middle of the banquet, my host introduced me to the guests. Then he said," "Now, you may ask Rev.Jean Darnall any questions you have about God. I'm sure she would love to answer!" In no time at all they asked, "Why does God allow war?" "Why do the innocent have to die?" "Is it fair for good people to suffer bad things?"
As they continued to ask, I repeated, "I don't know" to all their questions. My disappointed host urged me to say more. "I've told you what I don't know, now let me, please, tell you what I do know." They agreed.
I told how God's grace changed my life through a miracle of healing; how I had seen him heal broken hearts, lives and marriages. I spoke of God's power, sovereignty, grace and favor. I added,"There is much about God's will and ways I do not know, but I do know he answers prayer and loves everyone."
The silence that followed was broken by a request to pray for the host's invalid wife. As I prayed, her spine was straightened. The dinner party became a prayer meeting.
What more is needed? Eloquent arguments are not enough. The demonstration of God's power proves Jesus is alive and answers prayer today.
Prayer: Lord, I want to share my testimony and your Word today. Help me to show others how you change lives by your power. Give me faith to pray for them . Amen
