“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave and strong. Let all that you do be done with love.” I Corinthians 16:13-14
Christians face agitating issues in today's world. We must choose not to be silent about things that matter to us. It is our privilege to engage in contemporary issues with biblical truth. We dare not be weak and wobbly cowards, as many around us are.
It is amazing how much help we can get from the Scriptures on current issues. There are guidelines and clear commands which, if recognized and put into action, will maintain a light and salt effect in our homes, workplaces and even our churches! But our engagement must be enacted with love, not harsh regimentation.
Lots of hot debates were going on in the early church. There were issues about the use of spiritual gifts, matters of worship, church discipline, what to eat and what not to eat. Apostle Paul did not sweep them all under the rug with a statement like: “It really doesn't matter how you do these things, just as long as you love one another.”
Love, yes. But not at the expense of discipline. Paul's words indicate we are to be firm in our convictions, but with love. Paul said, “Be definite about what you eat and where you buy it, but with a loving attitude.” This is all very everyday practical stuff.
Parents, as well as church leaders, have a duty to be on guard, to be firm in the faith, to be courageous and alert. Be sentries and keep watch on your family's behavior and choices. Also be lovers and embrace your children in the circle of God's compassion.
BE ALERT AND INFORMED: Are there hot issues left untended, allowed to smolder where you live and serve? Discussion can create cool, clear, informed decisions. Listen to each other. Look in the Scriptures. Learn together to do everything in love.
PRAYER: Jesus, keep me alert. Help me not to compromise my convictions. Lord, keep me resolute but help me to never stop loving those in my care. Thank you, Amen
