“A hearing ear and the seeing eye: the Lord made them both.” Prov.20:12
A readiness to be taught is vital to the spirituality of any follower of Christ. Spiritual insight and discernment are gifts given by the Master to those who are teachable.
Jesus was quick to answer questions his disciples asked when he taught, when he ministered to the sick and when they wanted to learn to pray. He explained to them prophecies about his death and resurrection. He knew their eagerness to learn was important to their spirituality.
The disciples were given insights into God's kingdom. It was important they learned how it worked. Later, when they spread the good news of the kingdom to their world, the Holy Spirit reminded them of the secrets of the kingdom Jesus had taught.
They looked at Jesus' way of life and it made them listen and lean towards the face of God, eager to hear and learn. Their receptivity was a gift from Jesus. He blessed them with eyes that could see and ears that could hear. Mt.13:16.
Incline your ear near to the mouth of God and be eager for fresh insight into God's kingdom. He has blessed you with spiritual receptivity; ears that hear and eyes that see. Jesus said there were lots of people, even prophets, from former times who would have been very happy to hear what you can hear and to see what you can see.
Those with an unteachable spirit are not necessarily those who do not see or hear, but those who refuse to learn. They stare rather than seeing, or taking it in. They hear but do not listen, their thoughts are elsewhere. deaf to what they hear.
LISTEN and LEAN FORWARD: A disciple intent to see the face and to hear the voice of his Teacher. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
PRAYER: Bless my eyes, to see the truths you have for me. Open my ears to hear your voice and teach me your ways. I will listen, Jesus, ready to do your will. Amen
