“You shall have no other god's before Me. You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,......“ Exodus 20:3 -6
“A new Ten Commandments is needed....” That's what Lech Walesa said this week.
Lech Walesa, who won the Nobel prize 30 years ago for his leadership of Poland's Solidarity trade union and the group's peaceful end to communism in 1989, said a new Ten Commandments is needed to bring together the world under one basic set of principles. The Polish leader was opening speaker of a three-day summit of Nobel Peace Prize winners in Warsaw this week.
He did not offer exact examples of what those core principles would be, but we know the Ten Commandments contain what many might consider principles of honest living that are pertinent to all religions. For instance, 'do not steal' and 'do not commit false witness.'
Do we need a new Ten Commandments? I wonder what they would be..or even if there would be ten? Most of the original ten tell us what we should not do, and that does not go down well with a culture that has renamed 'truth' to 'opinion.'
To make it harder, God declares he is jealous for our devotion. He warns that if we will not accept there is no other god than He whom we should worship, our children will suffer because of it for several generations! Most folks stop right there and fail to read the final words of the first commandment: “But I am unswervingly loyal to the thousands who love me and keep my commandments.”
LOVE GOD and OBEY His Word: You will link your family for generations to His loyalty.
PRAYER: Dear Father God I want to show my love for you by submission to your Word, not to my self-made rules. Forgive where I have failed.. In Jesus' Name. Amen
